The main purpose of the Animal Facility of the Centro de Investigaciones Biológicas (CIB) is to produce and maintain the animals required for the different research lines carried out by scientists in our Centre. The Animal Facility is designed to house mainly experimental animal species like mice and rabbits and, occasionally, rats and hamsters.
The Centro de Investigaciones Biológicas (CIB-CSIC) joined the Acuerdo de Transparencia en Experimentación Animal, promoted by Confederación de Sociedades Científicas de España (COSCE) with the colaboration of the Asociación Europea para la Investigación Animal (EARA).
Services provided to CIB users
A) Related to breeding and maintenance of animals.
Production and maintenance of animals. The Animal Facility breeds mice of any strain, of any age and sex required by scientist in our Centre. All other species, including rabbits, are purchased from specialized providers.
To provide female mice with known date of gestation.
All other tasks related to inoculation and extraction of fluids, throught different routes of administration.
Extraction of organs, sacrifice and necropsies. These include those related with the production of monoclonal antibodies in mice
Production of polyclonal antibodies in mice and rabbits.
Serology and parasitology control of animals in the colony.
Extraction and fixing of organs and tissues including necropsies.
Use of different surgical techniques
B) Related to the generation of transgenic mice.
Pseudogestant female mice with known date.
Re-derivation of mouse strains by embryo transfer.
Cryopreservation of embryos for maintaining mouse strains.
Services offered to external users
- Re-derivation of mouse strains by embryo transfer.
- To provide female mice with known date of gestation.
- Cryopreservation of embryos for maintaining mouse strains
- Production of polyclonal antibodies in mice and rabbits
- Extraction and fixing of organs and tissues including necropsies.
- Breeding and maintenance of mouse strains for research non-CIB groups (depending on availability of space and with the express permission of the Centre Management).
The size of the Animal Facility is about 800 m2. There are separate facilities specific for the maintenance of mice and rabbits.
The mouse facilities are divided in different, clearly defined areas, as follows:
Production area: Breeding of mouse strains is carried out under specific pathogen-free (SPF) conditions. The colony is periodically checked for the presence of pathogens. Only the service personnel have access to this restricted area, after rigorous measures in order to prevent pathogen infections. All the materials used in this area are previously sterilized.
Research area: In this clean area, physically close to the Production area, SPF conditions cannot be guaranteed. For this reason, the access is restricted to service personnel as well as to authorized researchers. Every person accesing this area must wear sterile lab coat, gloves, cap, mask, and shoe covers.
Quarantine area: This is a separate facility used to carry out experimental procedures with mice obtained from other facility, or maintaining mouse strains until its passage to the production area after a rederivation process by embryo transfer. The conditions to access this area are the same as those of the research area. Anybody entering this area is forbidden to enter the research area until, at least, 24 h afterwards.
