Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry

The Chromatography facility was created in 1988 in order to fulfill the needs of CIB and external users. The current Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry Service of the CIB-Margarita Salas (CEM-CIB) emerged in 2023 as an expansion of the previous Gas Chromatography Facility with incorporation of new equipments of gas and liquid chromatograhs. Chromatography is indicated for the separation, identification and quantification of substances present in complex samples; Mass Spectrometry also allows obtaining information about the mass and structure of the analyzed compounds. So this technique coupled with Chromatography increases analytical possibilities.

Some routine analyses performed at the CEM-CIB facility are:

Gas Chromatography

     Separation and characterization of:

• TMS derivatives/oximes of carbohydrates

• Alditol acetates

• Trimethylsilyl derivatives of several compounds

• Volatile fatty acids

• Essential oils

• Steroids

• Polihydroxialcanoates

        Liquid Chromatography: 

                - Proteins purification.

    - Organic Compounds purification.

    - Metabolomic.

    - Measurement of molecular weight, size and structure of polymers (GPC)

Other protocols can be set up on users demand.

• Gas chromatograph 7890A (Agilent) equipped with a Flame Ionization Detector, Thermal Conductivity Detector, autosampler (150 vials) and Headspace Sampler 7697A (Agilent).

• Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry system (GC-MS) 7980A-5975C from Agilent for analysis of volatile samples of low molecular weight and autosampler (150 vials).

• GC INTUVO 9000 con FID.

• INTUVO-MS5977B Inert Plus MSD Turbo.

• 1260 GPC/SEC MDS-Chloroform (Agilent).

• LC/MS Single Quadrupole 1260 INFINITY II-MSD XT (Agilent)

• Preparative LC Systems Agilent 1260 INFINITY II and ÄKTA pure 150M (Cytiva).
