UNESCO stated in 2015 that February 11 was the International Day of Women and Girls in Science to inspire and promote women's participation in education, training, and science and technology and recognize the critical role of girls and women in the scientific and technological communities.
At the Margarita Salas Center for Biological Research, 57% of the staff are women, working as scientific personnel and in training, technical and administrative support.
To commemorate this day, the CIB Margarita Salas is launching a visibility campaign on social networks to collect the names of inspiring and referential women scientists, living or deceased, from different fields of science. You can contribute through this link and highlight your favorite women researchers in a "Cloud of Women Scientists" that we will update in the coming days.
In addition, on February 11 at 11:00h, we inaugurate the photographic exhibition "Faces of Science: Women Changing the World" at the CIB Margarita Salas library, which can be visited from that date until March 8.
In collaboration with the Instituto de Geociencias (IGEO) and the Instituto Geológico y Minero de España (IGME), we are organizing the “Ruta con Científicas”, two tours that will be held on February 14 from 16:30h in the neighborhood of Ríos Rosas in Madrid.
Blanca Horta, a TFM student from the Master in Integrative Synthetic Biology (MISB, CSIC-UIMP) has prepared a text describing the fundamental role of women inventors, scientists, and technologists who have contributed to improving our daily routines. You can read it here.
Six Spanish women scientists will give their names to the new streets in sector 113 of Los Salobrales in Alcalá de Henares, to make the inclusion of women in science more visible. One of them will be Prof. Flora de Pablo, a researcher at CIB Margarita Salas from 1991 until her retirement.
Moreover, several of our researchers are participating in different initiatives in schools and high schools in the Community of Madrid:
Helena Gómez Álvarez (CIB-CSIC), Sheila Pinto García (CIB-CSIC, CIBERER), Rocío Costo Cámara (ICTP-CSIC) and Leyre Barreiro Garayalde (private company)
