The European Low Gravity Research Association (ELGRA) has awarded Dr. Javier Medina, researcher at the Centro de Investigaciones Biológicas, with the «Elgra Medal». ELGRA joins together more than 300 scientist from different European countries dedicated to low gravity research and it is celebrating in 2019 its 40th anniversary.
During the 26th ELGRA Symposium and General Assembly celebrated in Granada between 24th-27th September, the scientist will received the award, which recognizes Dr. Medina and his team discoveries to make possible the growth and cultivation of plants within space exploration. It is mandatory that space explorers carry and cultivate plants, to get the essential nutrients for their survival. Dr. Javier Medina designed and led in 2003 the first European experiment with plants in the International Space Station, which was developed by the Spanish astronaut Pedro Duque, now acting minister of the Spanish Government. Later, he has led four other space experiments within the research programs of the European Space Agency and NASA.
