In early 2020, the Margarita Salas Center for Biological Research (CIB-CSIC) signed an agreement with the Spanish Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (SEBBM) to set the transfer to its library of the SEBBM's graphic and documentary archive on Margarita Salas, as well as the historical photographic archive of the society since its foundation in 1963.
The archive is deposited and guarded at the center's library, which has actively participated in the cataloging, archiving, and conservation of almost 300 photographs. The Unit of Scientific Information Resources for Research (URICI) has been in charge of digitizing them and has recently uploaded them to SIMURG, the open-access portal of CSIC's digitized collections.
Among these photographs stand out those referring to the VI FEBS Congress (European Federation of Biochemical Societies) organized by the Spanish Society of Biochemistry (SEB) and held in Madrid in 1969. The event was a success at the time: approximately 2,200 scientists from all over the world attended, including 8 Nobel Prize winners, and the conferences, colloquia, and symposia were of high scientific quality. The celebration of this Congress in Madrid was a very important recognition of the international scientific community to Biochemistry in Spain, thanks to the work and support of partners such as Alberto Sols or Severo Ochoa.
