On November 21, 2019, the Center for Biological Research of the CSIC added to its name that of Margarita Salas, in homage to this scientist who carried out her doctoral thesis at the CIB in the period 1961-1964. She also began her career as an independent researcher in this center where she carried out her research between 1967-1977, which culminated in a long scientific trajectory, one of the most outstanding and prolific in the history of the CSIC and Spain.
On January 26, 2022, a ceramic mural was inaugurated in honor of Margarita Salas at the entrance to the center on Ramiro de Maeztu street, commemorating the change of name of the CIB-CSIC. The president of the CSIC, Rosa Menéndez, discovered the ceramics outside the building, continuing the act inside the center.
Participants in this event were Enrique J. de la Rosa, director of the CIB-CSIC; Lucía Viñuela, daughter of Margarita Salas and president of the Margarita Salas Foundation; and Jesús Ávila and Miguel A. Peñalva, disciples of Margarita Salas who investigated at her group in the CIB. The closing of the ceremony was carried out by Rosa Menéndez, president of the CSIC.
In addition to those already mentioned, the tribute was also attended by Luis Blanco and José María Lázaro, also disciples of Margarita Salas; the directors of CBMSO, ICTAN, CENIM and IGEO; the President of the SEBBM, Isabel Varela, and María Luisa Salas, sister of Margarita Salas. It was also present Lucía Bosch, the author of the mural that was inaugurated at this event, and Yolanda González, whose illustrations allusive to Margarita Salas and other pioneering researchers from her time at the CIB decorate the hall of the center.
The opening ceremony, with limited capacity due to the current health situation, was broadcasted live on the center's YouTube channel:
